Art, design, and the experience of place

Rachel Kavathe is a public artist, licensed landscape architect, and urban designer whose interdisciplinary practice explores how art and design can deepen our connection to place.

Her work moves between studio art, site-specific and public art, landscape architecture, urban and rural design, planning, and teaching. Across these practices, she investigates how we perceive places, how we form relationships with them, and how artistic inquiry paired with design thinking can reveal new possibilities.

Three ways of working…

STUDIO PRACTICE

Rachel Kavathe's studio practice uses sculpture, painting, and material experimentation to investigate how we experience a place. She investigates the qualities of a particular environment, focusing on materials, color, texture, light, and natural processes. She then translates those observations into physical works that invite closer attention to the world around us.

PUBLIC ART PRACTICE

Rachel Kavathe creates site-responsive public art that invites people to experience and connect with a place in new ways. Drawing on her background in art, landscape architecture, urban design, and planning, she develops work that responds to the physical, cultural, and sensory qualities of a site. Her public art practice often involves collaboration with the community and the environment, and seeks to create meaningful experiences between people, art, and the places they inhabit.

CONSULTING

Rachel Kavathe works with design teams, municipalities, and arts organizations to integrate artistic inquiry, public art, place strategy, and experiential thinking into the planning and design of places. As a public artist, landscape architect, urban designer, and former city planner, she brings an interdisciplinary perspective to projects at the intersection of art, design, and place. She helps clients identify opportunities for art and creative thinking to contribute meaningfully to the experience, identity, and character of a place.
